The Truth of Who You Really Are | Blog

There is always more of what we don't know about ourselves than what we do know.

Each of us has infinite capacities for new insight and fresh perspective. We can see ourselves, a circumstance or a person with new eyes and discover new depths and potential at any moment. There is no limit to our ability to have an ‘aha moment'.

Those moments are often followed with new hope and clarity. For many, they are moments that remind us about the truth of who we are.

This week I am in London at the Life 2.0 Conference. This is an annual conference that brings together people from all over the world. People who are interested in sharing how a simple understanding has the power and potential to transform lives, organizations and communities.

How does it do that? Well, there are many ways to answer that question. For today, I'd like to share how it wakes us up to the truth of who we are.

By truth of who we are, I don't mean our personality, our likes/dislikes, our temperament or our strengths and weaknesses. I don't mean our pasts, our cultures, our age, sex or the usual ways we might describe ourselves.

Here's what I do mean…

We are this amazing, rich, diverse, multi-faceted human AND we are this formless, creative infinite intelligence. We have a human spirit, an essence, a deeper intelligence within. We are both the form and the formless.

If you're like me when I first started to really consider this, you might be thinking, “What does this have to do with my business or with anything?” or “This sounds too woo woo for me.”

Hang with me for a moment.

I can honestly say, that looking in this direction and being willing to see what I don't know versus what I already knew has been the single most transformational decision in my life and in the lives of my clients.

Seeing that there is more to who we are and how we work than what is visible to the eye, woke me up to new levels of potential and capabilities. It has become new ground from which I build my business and live my life.

I heard an analogy one time that I'd like to share here. What if we are lamps? Many shapes, sizes, colors, etc. Our humanness, our bodies, personalities, behaviors, preferences, are the actual lamps and shades.

Yet what really powers the lamps? It's not the shade. It's not even the lightbulb.

The power that lights the lamp is the electricity. Without it, there is no light. The electricity causes the light to shine through it. This is our deeper nature, our essence.

When we identify with both the human and the deeper essence, we see the full truth of who we are.

If we only think of ourselves as our bodies, our achievements our circumstances, what happens in our life, then we are identifying with the lamp. If we identify with our spirit, our essence, that deeper intelligence, than we are identifying with something much bigger than the form. Something which flows through us and has the power to light our paths and illuminate life in a whole new way.

Seeing this truth, allows us to move through our lives and our work with more confidence. We realize we have way more going for us.

We have this powerful, innate capability that funds everything we do. It lights the way. It’s the fuel and the true power source. It generates the light.

When we appreciate that we are both the lamp and the electricity we are no longer defined by the limitations of the past, our behaviors or our thoughts. We see there is more unknown, more potential available to us.

We see the truth of who we are: we are both this incredible human being and we are this creative life force; this deeper intelligence that gives us the ability to shift, transform, connect and create.

“Seeing that there is more to who we are than what is visible to the eye, wakes us up to new levels of potential.”

We do not have to generate wisdom or insight – it is already there.
