Distinguishing Between The Pace of Our Mind and Natural Momentum | Blog

New Adventures & A Move

I'm moving. What started as a small nudge that it might be time for a change has accelerated into a moving sale, packing a house, putting things in storage, basing out of Scotland & Europe for 4-6 months, and eventually landing in Asheville, NC. Well, that's how it looks today, anyway.

Over the last year, I've wondered if it might be time for a move. At one point, it felt urgent, “Yes, it's time. Go now.” When I felt restless and discontented, a move looked like the remedy.

My mind would start rushing, figuring out where I would live and all the details that would need to be handled. I would think about packing up my house, which would feel overwhelming. Noticing these feelings was my guide. They were the wake-up call that I was ahead of myself.

I was experiencing the pace of my mind versus allowing the natural momentum of life to reveal the next move.

More and more, I have come to appreciate that this is how it works. Some changes come fast and furious. An opportunity falls on our laps, or a chance encounter leads to a new path or relationship. An insight comes through that opens up new possibilities or solves a problem.

At other times, we get a hint of something. We begin to feel a stirring, something opening up, or perhaps like my move, we get a glimpse of a future that looks different than where we are today. It's more of a slow burn – a journey over time.

Learning to get a feel for, and allow the natural momentum of these changes to unfold, whether fast or slow, helps us tap into more clarity, flow, and grace.

In hindsight, we often appreciate the pace of things and why they take the time they take. We appreciate that each move, each step, is an essential part of the journey.

In my current situation, whenever I tried to push a decision, I would ultimately get tense or frustrated because things didn't seem to be happening. When I would come back to real-time and let go of trying to force clarity, I would feel a deeper knowing that all was well and I was right where I needed to be.

I would remember that my happiness, success, or fulfillment was not dependent on me figuring this out or on an actual relocation.

Clarity was there beneath my stirred-up, searching mind. The clarity was “not yet.” The natural momentum was moving slower than I thought it should at times, but when I would surrender, I would experience more lightness and curiosity. What felt like it was taking “ages” to unfold was just a temporary experience of my mind, not a truth.

A few weeks ago, that slow burn turned into a big wave of movement. Over three weeks, the next move, the next step, unfolded rapidly. Where and when I was going expanded daily.

A message from a friend went from an invitation for a potential visit to working from Scotland and Europe for a few months. A spring move to Asheville shifted to a summer one. Getting out of my current home in late Spring turned into packing up and getting out within four weeks. It's been a bit crazy and full but exciting.

What's been interesting as well is that while I'm clear that I'm headed to Scotland in mid-March, I'm not sure what's beyond that. I have a sense, a feeling of potential and possibility. I can feel the rightness in this next step even though I can't see all the details.

I know I will connect with clients in the UK & Europe and travel back to the states for a few client engagements, but that's it. I don't know all the moves or everything that will be possible. I don't have a guaranteed opportunity waiting for me, but when I allow and trust that all I need to know is the next move, I am excited and curious to see what this adventure will show me.

What if that's all that's ever really needed? Our minds want to rush ahead, they want certainty, or they get impatient, but beneath the experience of our minds is our deeper knowing.

When our minds settle, when thought falls away, we feel the natural momentum and truth.

When we allow the natural momentum to guide us, we experience more joy, fulfillment, and ease along the way.

Wisdom comes to us in real-time along the way, and when we get a feel for the natural pace of our ideas, of those nudges, we experience the intelligence of life and trust in the timing.

We unfold, and the next move is revealed.

“Learning to get a feel for, and allow the natural momentum of change to unfold, whether it's happening fast or slow, helps us tap into more clarity, flow, and grace. .
