Why Your Ability to Get Over Things Matters | Video

I’m always impressed when watching the Olympics and the athletes make a mistake, they tumble, they fall and then they have to get right back up and do it again. They “shake it off” and keep going. Not just their bodies but you can almost see the way their minds get focused and they come back to the moment with a fresh start.

They “get over” the previous move, the fall, the last moment and as a result, they are able to keep open, agile, focused and finish.

This highlights the potential we all have to bounce back, get over things and keep moving forward.

When things don’t go well or they don’t go our way, we can get disappointed, discouraged and even angry. It happens to all of us. It’s human and even understandable.

Getting reactive, making a mistake, is not the problem, it’s our ability to get over it, that matters.

When we allow our reactions to pass, as they naturally do, we get our bearings. We bounce back.

Getting over things, bouncing back is often underappreciated for its benefit.

Being able to get beyond our reaction and keep moving forward, be resilient and maintain our relationships is critical in our work and our lives.

There are lots of examples where people lose their bearings, get over it, and are able to keep moving forward.

  • A sales person doesn’t get the sale, but they go on the next call
  • A date doesn’t go well, yet we try again with someone new
  • Two people in relationship have a disagreement but get over it and are able to stay in a good feeling for one another
  • We make a mistake but keep a clear head and make it right
  • A project at work doesn’t go as planned but the team is able to bring new ideas to the situation.

Getting over things, including our reactions, gives us a huge advantage.

When we understand that what’s happening in our minds shows up in our feelings, we are more agile, more adaptable. We move on and bounce back.

We are better at working things out when we’re in a better state of mind.

In this week’s video, I share a story of one leader who was finding it hard to get over being passed up for a promotion and the impact it was having on her own state of mind and her work.

“Getting reactive is not the problem, it’s our ability to get over it, that matters.”

Our minds are designed to clear, to settle. Reactions are temporary. As the reaction fades, our resiliency rises, we get over things and are able to move ahead with more goodwill and understanding.
